About MII

Michigan Interactive Investments offers members a unique, real-world investing experience through education and hands-on portfolio management. An important goal of MII is to educate members about investing and strengthen their knowledge of financial markets. Senior members present lectures ranging from the fundamentals of equity investing to more advanced derivative strategies. Intertwined in these lectures are discussions of current events to provide members with a better understanding of current economic conditions. Members learn not only how to analyze market sectors and securities but also how to present their ideas to others.

MII builds a student run portfolio through a process in which members evaluate market sectors and pitch their best investment ideas. After their trade rational is presented to the club, members vote on whether the security should be added to the MII portfolio.

MII is unique in that it manages a student run portfolio that is completely funded by members. Each member gives MII a $100 portfolio deposit which is non-refundable. The club looks to grow the size of its portfolio through sound investment decisions. Since MII is a student organization at the University of Michigan, profits made throughout the year are either reinvested into the following year’s portfolio or are used to support operations and special events throughout the year.

In the fall of 2008, Michigan Interactive Investments underwent a transformation in which membership was reduced to 60 members to create a more cohesive and better functioning organization. The new structure promotes greater interaction among members and a better platform for members to learn about investing. Entry into Michigan Interactive investments is very competitive and done to ensure that the most dedicated and qualified individuals become members of MII. The acceptance rate for MII applicants at the beginning of each year is usually less than 10%.

Each fall, MII hosts the Undergraduate Investment Conference (UIC). The UIC invites participants from over twenty of the top universities in the country for the featured stock pitch competition. The winner is awarded a $4,000 grand prize. In addition, the Conference includes a keynote speech and the opportunity for students and corporate partners to meet. For more information, please see the main UIC website.
